This is the most common form of leg ulcers and usually occurs in patients with venous disaese venous velves where they do not work properly, causing backflow and the accumulation of blood in the leg veins section. Increased pressure on the veins cause pain, itching and swelling around the wound. This may quickly lead to death of the tissue forming ulcers. Venous ulcers are very difficult to treat and have a tendency to relapse. Patients with venous ulcers ussually have difficulty moving due to pain in the legs.

Cause of Venous Ulcers

A venous ulcers is coused by low blood circulation due to damaged blood vessels. The are two main types of blood vessels:
Artery  -  Oxigen rich blood pumped from the heart through arteries and then into the rest of your body.
Vein  - The blood back to the heart through the veins after the oxigen has removed.

Vein problems occur when the valves in veins stop working properly.
In a healthy vein, blood flows to the heart. The blood is prevented from flowing backwards by a series of velves that open and closed to let blood through. If the velves weaken or damaged, for example, following deep vein thrombosis, blood can flow backwards.

This can lead to varicose veins visible on the surface of the foot, or damage may lie in the deep veins that are hidden from view. The pressure in the blood vessels increases and that can damage the skin. High blood pressure is a constant in the leg causing fluid to leak out of the vein. The fluid causes swelling and damage to the skin, which become hard and inframed and can cause ulcers.
